Abstract: The study localized carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and phosphatase enzymes in the thyroid gland tissues of ten-month-old Large white Yorkshire pigs. Phosphatase enzymes were demonstrated in the fresh frozen sections whereas, carbohydrate and protein were localized in the paraffin-fixed histological sections. The follicular epithelial cells and the colloid within the follicles revealed moderate to strong PAS reaction. The follicular epithelial cells and the colloid of the thyroid follicles exhibited moderate activity for Million reaction for tyrosine containing protein. However, the Millon reaction was less intense in the interfollicular connective tissue. The staining intensity for the lipid exhibited a decreasing trend from the follicular epithelial cells, colloid and in the interfollicular connective tissue. The lining follicular epithelium presented better lipid activity than the colloid and the interfollicular area. The follicular epithelial cells revealed intense activity for alkaline phosphatase. Acid phosphatase activity was prominent at the apical border of follicular cells. The follicular colloid did not show any acid or alkaline phosphatase activity.
