Abstract: The research work wasrnconducted on 24 clinical cases of dogs diagnosed with long bone fractures. Allrnthe dogs underwent thorough anamnesis, clinical and orthopedic examination.rnAmongst the 96 cases of long bone fracture incidence was highest in young dogsrnless than 12 months (30.43%) followed by those of 25-36 months old (28.26%).rnThe femur (26.09%) was the most commonly fractured long bone, followed by therntibia (21.74%) and the radius ulna (19.75%). The incidence was higher in malesrn(68.48%) than in females (31.52%), and non-descript (43.48%) dogs were mostrncommonly affected. The dogs were randomly divided into three groups of 8 dogsrneach. Orthogonal radiographic views were taken to diagnose the type of fracturernand decide the sizes of the implants. Group I dogs underwent fracture fixationrnusing LCP only, while in group II dogs, along with plating, collagen membrane, rnand PRP were applied at the fracture site. In group III, Cissusrnquadrangularis extract (800 mg/day) was administered as an oral preparationrnfor 30 days post-operatively. In all cases, physiological parameters monitoredrnduring general anaesthesia were within normal range. Radiologically in group IIrnearly bone healing was observed followed by group III and group I.rnHaemato-biochemical parameters were within normal range at differentrnpost-operative intervals. Weight bearing on walking started earliest in dogs ofrngroup II (p<0.05), followed by those of group III, and it was slowestrnin group I. In conclusion, LCP provided adequate immobilization of fracturernfragments. The addition of osteoinductive materials, collagen membrane, PRP andrnHerbal extract Cissus quadrangularis (800 mg/day PO) promoted bonernhealing and enabled early weight bearing providing a promising area of researchrnin veterinary orthopedics.
