Cytological diagnosis of oral malignant melanoma in a dog: A case report

Abstract: A nine year old male Labradorrndog was presented to the Sanchu Animal Hospital, Chennai with the history ofrnmass located on its right buccal region. Fine needle aspiration procedure wasrnperformed from the mass and the smears were stained and subjected torncytological examination. Cytological examination of the aspirated smearsrnrevealed population of pleomorphic cells which were round to elliptical inrnshape with centrally to eccentrically placed nuclei. The nuclei were round tornovoid in shape containing coarsely granular chromatin with multiple nucleoli.rnThe cytoplasm which was lightly bluish in colour contained numerous blackishrngranules of variable sizes characterstic of melanin granules. In some areas,rnfew mitotic figures were also observed. Based on the cytological findings, the massrnwas confirmed as malignant melanoma.
