Abstract: Histochemical localization of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and phosphatase enzymes was done on the adrenal gland of ten-month-old large white Yorkshire pigs. Fresh frozen sections were employed for the identification of phosphatases, and paraffin-fixed sections for detecting carbohydrate and protein. The superficial zona glomerulosa layer of the adrenal cortex exhibited a strong PAS-positive reaction; the activity decreased gradually in the other deeper cortical zones. The capsule and outer medulla were strongly positive to the Millon reaction. An intense reaction for lipids was observed in the capsule; the intensity was moderate in the Zona fasciculata and zona reticularis. The capsule did not reveal any acid or alkaline phosphatase activity. The zona glomerulosa exhibited intense acid and alkaline phosphatase reactions.
