Abstract: A carcass of a Desi chicken was referred to the Department of Veterinaery Pathology, Madras Veterinary College, and Chennai for postmortem examination. A detailed necropsy was carried out and gross examination revealed emaciation and haemorrhages on the mucosa of the entire gastrointestinal tract. Gizzard showed a solitary grayish white nodule which on incision revealed soft to firm in consistency. Proventriculus revealed petechial hemorrhages while other organs namely lungs, liver, kidney, heart etc showed congestion. Polymerase chain reaction assay carried out on proventricular tissue was negative for Newcastle disease virus. Microscopic examination of heart blood smears revealed no bipolar organisms. Histopathological examination of the nodules adhering to mucosal surface of the gizzard showed features suggestive of adenocarcinoma. Based on the above findings, diagnosis was confirmed as gastric adenocarcinoma.
