Assessment of production performance of pekin and desi ducks under semi-intensive farming system

Author(s): Vikrama Chakravarthi and B Mohan
Abstract: The present study was conducted to findout the production performance of White pekin ducks in comparison to regular desi ducks under farmers field condition. Hundred numbers of Vigova Super M (White Pekin) ducklings were obtained from CPDO, Hasserghata, Bangalore and hundred number of desi ducklings procured locally weremaintained at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Namakkal for 2 weeks. The duck prestarter feed and duck plague vaccination were carried out. Five progressive duck farmers were selected for the study and they were handedover fifteen numbers of white pekin and desi ducklings each withfeed. The production performance parameters viz., feed consumption, weight gain and mortality rate were recorded in the farmers field during the study period of two months through regular visit. The feed conversion ratio and benefit to cost ratio was calculated to findout the viability of the farming. The results revealed that the body weight of Pekin ducks (2.458±0.18 kg) was higher in comparison to desi duck (1.486±0.11 kg) at 60days of age. The feed conversion ratio was found to be higher (2.70) in desi ducks than Pekin ducks (2.04), whereas the benefit to cost ratio was higher in Pekin farming (1.73) than desi ducks (1.49).From the findings, it was concluded that white pekin farming could be a economically viable venture for desi duck farmers.
