Management of organophosphate poisoning in a non-descriptive dog: A case report

Abstract: A two-year-old female of non-descriptive dog was attended at doorstep, in Pethappampatti village, Udumalpet, Tirupur, Tamil Nadu, with a history of accidental ingestion of pesticide. On clinical examination hyperthermia, hypersalivation, miosis, muscular tremors, tachycardia, tachypnoea, frequent urination and defecation was observed. Based on the owner history, symptoms and clinical examination it was diagnosed as Organophosphate (OP) poisoning. The affected dog was treated with Inj. Atropine sulphate at a dosage of 2 mg/kg IV for every 3-6 hours interval and fluid therapy. Activated charcoal 1 g/kg as a water slurry was administrated orally. Mydriasis was observed during atropinisation. A temperature (39.2 °C), pulse rate (82 beats/min) and respiratory rate (31 cycles/min) were recorded after treatment. Complete recovery was noticed after treatment.
