Surgical correction of thoracomelia in a day old lamb

Abstract: A Mecheri day old lamb was presented to the Veterinary Clinical Complex, VCRI, Namakwa with the history of having supranumerary limb on the thoracic region. On clinical examination, extra limb was hanging in the thoracic region up to the ground level and unable to walk. Radiographical examination, blood parameters and serum biochemistry within normal range. Under sedation and local infiltration, elliptical incision was made over the base of the additional limb and undermining of skin was done. By blunt dissection, muscles were separated and vessels were identified and ligated. Disarticulation of limb was done near the elbow joint. Muscles were sutured using vicryl 2-0 in simple continuous pattern and subcutaneous tissue and skin was sutured. Skin suture removal at 10th postoperative day. Animal made an uneventful recovery with normal function of limbs.
