Surgical retrieval of metallic foreign body from gland cistern of udder in a cow

Abstract: A Holstein Friesian crossbred cow aged three years was presented to the Veterinary Clinical Complex, VCRI, Namakkal with the history of broken piece of metal teat siphon got lodged in the udder from the right forequarter. On clinical examination the teat was firm, teat canal was hard and no milk let down from the right foreteat. Radiographical examination revealed presence of radiopaque foreign body in the gland cistern. Under ring block and linear infiltration, thelotomy was done at the base of teat and extended cranially to identify the foreign body. Foreign body was then retrieved. Surgical site was lavaged with normal saline and patency of teat canal was maintained by sterile infant feeding tube no 7. Gland cistern and base of teat was sutured using 3-0 vicryl in simple continuous pattern and PRP was applied. Skin suture removal at 10th postoperative day. Animal made uneventful recovery.
