Breeding Behaviors and Strategies in wild boars: A Comprehensive Overview

Author(s): Manjinder Kaur, Nisha Vashishat and Mohit Pun
Abstract: This study investigates the breeding behaviors and strategies of the Indian Wild Boar (Sus scrofa) and addressing a critical need for detailed information on this species' reproductive biology to inform effective management plans. While wild boar populations have experienced substantial growth in recent decades, leading to escalating human-wildlife conflict, particularly regarding agricultural damage, and significant ecological impacts, a comprehensive understanding of their breeding dynamics, especially within the Indian subcontinent, remains limited. Existing research often focuses on European or North American populations, leaving a crucial knowledge gap regarding the specific reproductive characteristics of Indian wild boar. This research deficit hinders the development of targeted and context-specific mitigation strategies to minimize agricultural losses, mitigate disease transmission risks, and conserve biodiversity. This manuscript explores various facets of Indian wild boar reproduction, including social interactions related to mating, sexual behavior, male and female reproductive physiology (including puberty, seasonality, and factors influencing reproductive success), breeding season patterns, gestation length, birth processes, and offspring development, including maternal care and social structure. By elucidating these key aspects of Indian wild boar breeding biology, this study aims to provide a robust scientific foundation for improved wild boar management practices, contributing to both agricultural protection and ecosystem health within the region. Furthermore, this research offers valuable insights for comparative studies with other wild boar populations globally.
