Abstract: A 2-year-old male beagle (intact) was presented with the history of respiratory distress for the past one month. Physical examination revealed rapid shallow breathing and muffled heart and lung sounds. Thoracic and abdominal radiography revealed displacement of intestinal loops and liver into the thoracic cavity with pleural effusion. Ultrasonography revealed accumulation of fluid in the thoracic cavity along with liver and intestinal loops. The case was confirmed as Diaphragmatic Hernia with Pleural effusion. Thoracocentesis was performed to relieve the accumulated fluid from chest cavity and a midline abdominal celiotomy was performed to reposition the liver and intestines to its anatomical position, the accumulated fluid was drained and the ruptured diaphragm was sutured using polyamide 1-0 in simple continuous manner and celiotomy incision was closed as per standard operating procedure. Postoperatively fluids, antibiotics and analgesics were administered for 7 days. The pet recovered uneventfully.
