A case report on fatal urethral obstruction in a Holstein-Friesian bull calf

Author(s): R Mahaprabhu, K Anbu Kumar and Kamal Purohit
Abstract: A 10 months age Holstein-Friesian crossbred calf was referred for necropsy at Madras Veterinary College, Vepery, Chennai and Tamil Nadu. On external examination, the calf showed a distended abdomen and pale conjunctival mucous membranes. Internal examination revealed approximately twenty liters of reddish urine in the abdominal cavity. The urinary bladder showed rupture along with blood clots at the site of the rupture. The liver showed focal necrosis. Lung revealed patchy haemorrhage. The kidneys exhibited cortical hemorrhage and a distended pelvis. The distal portion of the urethra was obstructed by a small stone, and the mucosal epithelium was hemorrhagic. The urolith obstruction caused the rupture of the urinary bladder, resulting in uroabdomen. Based on the findings, the cause of death was confirmed as urolithiasis and uremia.
