First case report on egg concretion and oviduct impaction in Indian Peahen

Author(s): R Mahaprabhu, K Anbu Kumar and Kamal Purohit
Abstract: This is the first reported case of egg concretion in an adult peahen, which was presented for necropsy at the Department of Veterinary Pathology, Madras Veterinary College and Chennai. External examination revealed signs of dehydration, red breast muscles, a distended abdomen, and white, pasty material adhered to the vent region. Gross examination showed that the oviduct was distended and occupied the entire abdominal cavity. A cut section of the multi-layered egg concretion displayed different layers, ranging from dark red to pale red, along with a central necrosed area. The middle layer of the egg concretion exhibited a yellowish fibrin layer. The intestinal mucosa was thickened and contained thick reddish-brown content. Based on these gross and characteristic findings, egg concretion with oviduct impaction was diagnosed in the Indian peacock. This is the first case report of egg concretion (oviduct impaction) in Chennai, Tamil Nadu and India.
