Housing and milking management practices for better dairy farming: A study in Satyasai district of Andhra Pradesh

Abstract: Animal husbandry is the major source of income and employment to majority of the landless, marginal, small farmers in India. The production potential depends mostly on the management practices under which they are reared. In this study the main focus is on the neglected yet important components of management i.e. housing and milking management practices. Few farmers were having pucca Drainage facilities (24.25%), location of manure pit away from the animal shed (0.75%), separate calf shed (2%), Practicing wallowing (13.25%). Majority of the farmers were following Knuckling method (88.5%) of milking, None of the respondents have a hired labour, not practicing the teat dipping in povidine, Dry cow therapy and majority pouring their milk to the private dairies (76.25%). Regular trainings including the follow ups are needed regarding hygienic housing and scientific milking management practices to get more yield, income and to make the dairy farms less susceptible to diseases.
