Adverse effects of nanosilver: A review on toxicity and health risks

Author(s): Manisha Parihar, RS Chauhan and Renu Singh
Abstract: Nanosilver (AgNPs) has gained widespread application in medicine, consumer products, and environmental sectors due to its antimicrobial properties. However, increasing evidence suggests that exposure to nanosilver may pose significant risks to human health and the environment. This review explores the toxicity of AgNPs, their mechanisms of interaction with biological systems, and potential health risks. The toxic effects of nanosilver are evaluated based on in vitro and in vivo studies, highlighting oxidative stress, genotoxicity, cytotoxicity, and inflammatory responses. Additionally, concerns regarding bioaccumulation, environmental contamination, and regulatory challenges are discussed. A better understanding of the adverse effects of nanosilver is essential for informed risk assessment and the development of safer nanotechnology applications.
