Epizootological studies on canine mammary tumours in Chennai

Abstract: The present study was carried out to know the prevalence of mammary tumours in dogs presented at Madras Veterinary College Teaching Hospital, Chennai for five months (July 2024- November 2024). A total number of 802 cytological smears made each from the mass of different breeds of dogs were referred to the Centralised Clinical Laboratory, Madras Veterinary College, Chennai for cytological diagnosis. The overall prevalence of mammary tumours was found to be 6.73%, of which, carcinoma (46.29%) showed the highest prevalence followed by adenocarcinoma (44.44%), fibrosarcoma (5.55%) and mixed tumour (3.70%). Between sexes, females showed the highest prevalence (96.29%) while males recorded the lowest prevalence (3.70%). Among various age groups affected, the highest prevalence was recorded in dogs belonging to more than 6 years (77.77%), followed by 3-6 years (12.96%) and 0-3 years (9.25%). Among different breeds, non-descript breeds revealed an increased prevalence (46.29%), followed by Labrador Retriever (16.66%), Spitz (12.96%) and German Shepherd, Pomeranian and Lhasa Apso (3.70%) each and Chippiparai, Bulldog, Lhasa Apso, Miniature Pinscher, Beagle, Doberman, Pug and Dachshund each (1.852%) each.
