Surgical repair of dual hindlimb fractures using orthogonal titanium veterinary cuttable plates and t-plate in a pediatric canine

Author(s): Ankush Kumar and Shivani Rohilla
Abstract:
Fractures in young dogs, particularly those involving weight-bearing bones such as the femur and tibia, require precise and individualized management due to their unique anatomical and physiological considerations. This report details the successful surgical treatment of a 2-month-old female indie puppy with comminuted diaphyseal fracture of the right femur and proximal transverse fracture of tibia sustained from a vehicular accident. Open Reduction and Internal Fixation (ORIF) was performed using orthogonal titanium Veterinary Cuttable Plates (VCP) for the femur and a titanium T-plate for the tibia. The procedure aimed to achieve rigid fixation, promote biological healing, and restore limb function. Postoperative recovery was uneventful, with early weight-bearing observed within 24 hours and complete functional use by 8 weeks. This case highlights the advantages of orthogonal double plating in enhancing mechanical stability and promoting reliable healing in pediatric orthopedic patients. It underscores the critical role of tailored surgical planning and execution in achieving successful outcomes in complex juvenile fractures.
