Concurrent infestation of Sarcoptes scabiei and Cheyletiella parasitovorax in pet Rabbits: Clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment

Abstract: Rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) are commonly affected by ectoparasitic infestations, with mites being a significant cause of dermatological conditions. This case report describes a rare instance of co- infestations of Sarcoptes scabiei and Cheyletiella parasitovorax in two pet rabbits, which were presented with alopecia, intense pruritus, scaly and crusted lesions on the face, ears, and paws. Based on the clinical signs and microscopic examination of skin scrapings from the affected lesions and morphologically it was confirmed as adult mites of S. scabiei and C. parasitovorax. Treatment involved weekly subcutaneous ivermectin injections (300 μg/kg b.wt), topical application of benzyl benzoate, and intramuscular chlorpheniramine maleate for pruritus relief, along with cage disinfection and hygienic measures to prevent further spread. This report highlights the importance of recognizing co-infestations in rabbits, as concurrent mite infestations may exacerbate clinical signs, and underscores the role of ivermectin as an effective treatment for mange in rabbits. Additionally, it emphasizes the zoonotic potential of these ectoparasites and the need for proper sanitation and preventive measures in rabbits.
