Modern biosecurity measures in pig farming

Author(s): Kuppireddy Divya, P Ponnuvel, V Rajaganapathy and S Venugopal
Abstract: Biosecurity is a crucial aspect of managing animal disease risks in pig farming, where the importance of biosecurity measures has become increasingly evident especially as the global pork industry faces increasing challenges from infectious diseases like African swine fever and porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome. This paper highlights the critical role of biosecurity in preventing disease outbreaks, protecting herd health, and ensuring sustainable pork production while addressing the economic implications of biosecurity measures, as they directly impact the profitability of pig farms. Additionally, it discusses the challenges and strategies for implementing biosecurity in large-scale farming systems, where animals have outdoor access, increasing susceptibility to wildlife-borne diseases. The review further explores internal and external biosecurity measures, including visitor and worker protocols, transportation hygiene, quarantine measures, animal movement and segregation, the importance of clean food, water, bedding, cleaning and disinfection, boot baths, waste management and proper disposal of dead animals are essential components of a comprehensive biosecurity program. In addition, it highlights, the emerging technologies in biosecurity, such as using sensors and algorithms, smart feeding and watering systems, and RFID tags to monitor individual feeding and drinking behaviours, which are essential components of a comprehensive biosecurity program. The primary goal of these biosecurity practices is to protect animal health, ensure the sustainability of pig farming, and safeguard public health within the One Health framework.
