Abstract: Canine Kobuvirus (CaKoV) is a non-enveloped, single-stranded positive sense RNA viruses and an emerging viral species of genus Kobuvirus under the family Picornaviridae that plays a major role in gastroenteritis. It was first isolated in USA in 2011 since then CaKoV has been discovered from many countries including China, South Korea, Japan, UK and Africa, suggesting a worldwide distribution. Herein, we review the Viral taxonomy, genome organization, epidemiology, disease manifestation and detection and characterization of the viral genome. This article provides valuable insights to emerging viral pathogen such as Canine Kobuvirus that causes severe gastroenteritis in dogs and provides evidence that it could be a potential zoonotic agent as it shares common phylogenetic traits with human Aichivirus. It has also been suggested that CaKoV cases have coinfection with other enteric virus such as Canine parvovirus, Canine Corona Virus, Canine Astrovirus, Canine Distemper and Canine rotavirus. This implies that CaKoV may be considered as a contributor or a secondary component in canine diarrhoea.
