Nesting materials preferences of common terrestrial birds

Abstract: Nesting materials of birds was studied out at 10 different sites in Jhalawar Region of Rajasthan. During the study total 127 nests were found of 15 different species belonging to 15 families out of them maximum number of nests were of Baya weaver birds and highest number of nests were observed at site I (College of Horticulture & Forestry). Three types of nesting sites were recognized for nests in all the study sites. Most of the species, about (n=80) built nests on trees; (n=30) in building spaces (roof, cornice, hole, crevice in wall, intersecting corner of building wall, ventilator (n=17) in electrical pillar, electrical box or air condition box. In nest construction, 28 types of materials were recorded of which twigs were the most used materials, other materials found in nests included: leaves, grass blades, fibers, feathers, dry sticks, cobwebs, straw, creepers, saliva of birds, cotton, plastic or polythene, wool, human hair, papers, grass roots, coir, rubbish, rootlets, barks, dry paddy, animal fur, rope, net, pieces of cloth, ribbons, glossy chocolate paper, moss, honeycombs.
