Traumatic reticulopericarditis in a jersey cow: Diagnosis and management

Abstract: A six-year-old jersey crossbred cow weighing around 250 kg bodyweight was presented to the Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex, Veterinary College and Research Institute, Tirunelveli with the history of swelling in brisket and ventral abdomen, anorexia, reduced milk yield and diarrhoea since last seven days. The animal was dull, depressed and emaciated. The clinical examination revealed pale conjunctival mucous membrane, brisket oedema, abduction of elbows and enlarged prescapular lymph nodes. Cardiac auscultation revealed muffled heart sounds and tachycardia. The faecal examination was negative for parasitic ova. Haematology and biochemistry revealed leucocytosis, thrombocytosis, hyperglobulinemia and elevated levels of aspartate transaminase. Echocardiography revealed pericardial effusion and strands of fibrin. Pericardiocentesis was performed and effusion was sent to laboratory for cytology and bacterial culture. Based on the history and clinical examination findings, diagnostic tests the case was diagnosed as traumatic reticulopericarditis with right sided congestive heart failure. The poor prognosis was explained to the owner. The animal was treated with oxytetracycline @ 20 mg /kg bw I.V, flunixin meglumine @ 1.1kg/kg b.w. I.M. and furosemide@ 1 mg/kg bw I.M. The animal was supplemented with 50 ml Vitakind Liv and bolus Ferri kind orally for 15 days.
