Abstract: A study was carried out in western part of Tamil Nadu to assess the flock size and composition of Peruvidai chicken population. Respondents were chosen on the basis of stratified random sampling technique. The data were collected from each respondent through a semi-structured interview schedule. The study revealed the mean flock size of 86.06 birds, in which the composition of chick, grower, cock and hen were 41.07, 22.08, 15.24 and 21.61 per cent, respectively. As rearing of Peruvidai chicken fetches high economic return against low investment, many agricultural families are maintaining better flock size to get additional income as a secondary enterprise. Hence, this could be considered in policy making decisions for the rural poor as a viable enterprise for their livelihood security.
