Abstract:
Cartap hydrochloride, a widely used pesticide in India, poses potential health risks, particularly to male reproductive health. This study investigates the effects of cartap on male reproductive function in adult male Wistar rats following 28 days of exposure at two doses (16.25 mg/kg and 32.5 mg/kg). Significant reductions in sperm concentration, live sperm percentage, and plasma testosterone levels were observed in cartap-treated groups. Co-treatment with α-tocopherol (100 mg/kg) showed a moderate ameliorative effect on sperm vitality and membrane integrity, although it did not significantly restore testosterone levels. These findings highlight the reproductive toxicity of cartap and suggest that α-tocopherol may offer some protective benefits against its harmful effects, warranting further investigation into the health implications of cartap exposure.
