Evaluation of haematological parameters by comparing traditional and automatic counter method in bovines

Author(s): M Sundara Vinayaki
Abstract: Haematological parameters are widely used for diagnosis and treatment purposes of various diseases. The major goal of this experiment is to evaluate the efficiency of blood analyser over manual methods in estimating blood parameters. Eight Bovine blood samples were collected from the animals brought into Teaching Veterinary Complex (TVC), VCRI, Tirunelveli and were subjected to haematological analysis viz., RBC (Millions/ Micro litre), WBC (Thousands / Micro litre), PCV (Percentage) and Hb (Gram / Decilitre) in both manual and blood analyser. The estimated mean blood values were found to be RBC 4.40 ± 0.51 and 6.42±0.48, WBC 7231±1.04 and 8750±3.83, PCV 30.46±2.44 and 32.03±2.77, Haemoglobin 9.93±0.87 and 11.91±0.87, respectively. A significant difference (P<0.05) was observed between manual and auto analyser methodologies in Red Blood cell Count. On the contrary, no significant difference was observed in total white blood cells, Haemoglobin, packed cell volume and its fractions. In conclusion, the values from automated methods could be used to substitute for those of the manual method, because the values of the two methods were found to be similar.
