Abstract: Swine Brucellosis is a contagious disease with greater zoonotic potential caused by Brucella suis. It is caused by B. suis biovars 1 and 3. It is characterized by infertility, abortion and birth of dead or weak piglets in sows, in boars it causes orchitis and infection in secondary sexual organs and lameness and paralysis in both sexes. The disease is generally transmitted during mating and by consumption of feed contaminated by birth and /or abortion products and uterine discharges. Transmission through the conjunctiva, broken skin and by inhalation were also reported in pigs. Animal and its products are the main source of human infection and rare transmission occurs between human-to-human. Although it causes economic losses, preventing human infection is the primary reason for implementing disease control programs. Considering animal and zoonotic infection, occupational risks and the economic losses, knowledge on the status of brucellosis infection in pigs and establishing the highly sensitive epidemiological tools and rationally specific testing systems are mandatory for detection and control of brucellosis in pigs.
