Abstract: A five-year-old female Great Dane dog was presented to the Small Animal Surgery outpatient unit of the veterinary clinical complex, of VCRI Namakkal with a complaint of anorexia, abdominal distension, praying posture, respiratory distress, unproductive vomiting and hypersalivation. On physical examination, temperature, respiratory and heart rates were elevated. Thoracic and right lateral abdominal radiographs revealed severe gastric dilatation with a double bubble appearance. The findings of the clinical examination and radiography aided in the diagnosis of the condition as gastric dilatation and volvulus, the treatment was initiated immediately after diagnosis. Stabilization of the animal was performed by administration of intravenous fluids and other supportive drugs and attempts were made to decompress the stomach by administration of a stomach tube which didn’t yield a positive result. An emergency laparotomy was performed, and the stomach was decompressed. Gastrotomy was performed to remove the contents and was closed using a simple continuous pattern followed by a Cushing pattern. Belt loop gastropexy was performed. Postoperatively, antibiotics and analgesics were given besides the administration of supporting drugs which showed an uneventful recovery.
