Author(s): G Senthil Kumar
Abstract: Colitis is defined as an inflammation of the inner lining of the colon and may be the result of an immune-mediated, infectious, inflammatory, or ischemic processes. One of the most efficient and appropriate tool in examination of large intestine is colonoscopy. A 4 years old male Dobermann dog weighing about 32 Kgs presented with the history of voiding little quantum faeces with excessive mucous and straining while defecation for the past 10 days. Routine clinical examination was performed and abdominal palpation evinced pain. Faecal sample collected as a swab showed mild blood and mucous. Leukocytosis with neutrophilia was evident in complete blood count. Radiographic examination of abdomen showed gas filled intestinal loops. Ultrasonography of intestines revealed thickened intestinal loops. Endoscopic assessment of colon revealed hyperemic, ulcerated and thickened mucosal wall. The dog was treated with Tablet Mesalazine, Prednisolone and Enrofloxacin for a specific period and the dog recovered uneventful.
