Abstract: An investigation was conducted to study the economics of milk production in Karnataka state. A total of 160 farmers were selected for this study comprising 80 each from the districts of Tumkur and Raichur. The study revealed that small, medium and large herds allocate 74.03, 74.18 and 75.20 percent of the gross cost towards variable expenses, with total variable costs per animal per litre of milk production at ₹ 26.29, ₹ 26.60 and ₹ 28.89, respectively, totalling ₹ 44830 or 74.36 percent of the overall cost. The gross cost per litre of milk production across herd sizes was ₹ 35.73 (₹ 152.82/day), ₹ 36.53 (₹ 160.81/day), and ₹ 38.41 (₹ 202.6/day) for small, medium and large herds, respectively, with an overall value of ₹ 36.5 (₹ 165.17/day). Net revenue per litre was highest for large herds (₹ 16.53), followed by medium herds (₹ 10.81) and small herds (₹ 9.92). The net revenue (excluding family labour) per litre was highest for large herds (₹ 19.99), followed by small herds (₹ 18.65) and medium herds (₹ 17.27). While the net returns per rupee (excluding family labour) was highest for small herds, large herds were more profitablein terms of net revenue per litre of milk produced and return on investment.
