Development and histoarchitecture of Hassall’s corpuscles in thymus of prenatal Surti goats

Author(s): Shailendra Chaurasia and R Menaka
Abstract: The study was conducted to elucidate the histogenesis and histomorphology of Hassall’s corpuscles in the thymus of 42 healthy Surti goat foetuses at different stages of their development ranging from 38 to 140 days (2.6 to 38.8 cm CR length). The beginning of Hassall’s corpuscles formation was first observed at the age of 51 days (7.0 cm CR length) in thymic medulla. At the age between 59 to 63 days (10.2 to 12.0 cm CR length), two types of Hassall’s corpuscles viz., unilayered and polymorphic were observed. The thymus showed some Hassall’s corpuscles in developing stage and some were fully developed at the age between 64 to 69 days (12.2 to 14.3 cm CR length). At 73 days (15.6 cm CR length), typical multilayered type of Hassall’s corpuscles was observed formed by 3 to 4 concentric layers of flat epithelial reticular cells with few degenerating and keratinized cells in the centre of corpuscle. The thymus from the age of 92 days onwards showed unilayered, multilayered and typical “onion-like” type of Hassall’s corpuscles in medulla of thymus.
