Synergistic effects of chloroquine and azithromycin in treating avian malaria: A case study of Indian peafowl

Abstract:
An adult male Indian Peafowl was presented to the Small Animal Medicine Unit of Veterinary Clinical Complex, Veterinary College and Research Institute, Orathanadu with a history of bird rescued by forest department from drenching area and was reluctant to move. On clinical examination of the bird was dull, recumbent and head tilting with respiratory distress was noticed. Blood smear revealed the presence of Haemoproteus sp. and Plasmodium sp. The bird was treated with combination of Tab. Chloroquine @ 5mg/kg B.W. P/O plus Tab. Azithromycin @ 40mg/kg B.W. along with Inj. Dexamethasone @ 0.5mg/kg b.wt IM. intramuscularly and oral hematinic was administered for 7 days. The bird was kept for observation in the inpatient unit for 10 days. The bird was recovered uneventfully.
