Author(s): Dr. K Sunny Praveen, V Radhika, T Chandrika, J Srihari, I Manoranjan, NR Srikanth and M Mutha Rao
Abstract: Artificial insemination (AI) has revolutionized the reproductive management of cattle and buffalo enabling genetic improvement, disease control and efficient breeding programs. The present update provides an overview of recent advancements in AI techniques including semen handling, as well as innovations in oestrus detection, site of insemination and timing and method of insemination. Furthermore, emerging technologies such as sexed semen and estimation of urinary luteinizing hormone for oestrus detection in buffaloes are discussed for their potential to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of AI programs. Additionally, challenges and future directions in the field are highlighted, emphasizing the need for continued research and innovation to further optimize AI practices and maximize genetic gains in cattle and buffalo populations.
