Abstract: Sericulture, a crucial sector for rural livelihoods in Jammu and Kashmir, is hindered by various constraints affecting production and productivity. The research, conducted through a survey of 120 farmers across eight beats, identifies key issues in production, technical knowledge, marketing, economics and social support among farmers in the Kothar zone, Anantnag. Major production constraints include the non-availability of scientific cocoon dryers, irrigation facilities and essential inputs like fertilizers and pesticides. Technically, farmers lack adequate knowledge of mulberry cultivation, disinfection practices and leaf quality. Marketing challenges are marked by a significant gap between production and market access, coupled with price volatility. Economically, the absence of insurance and financial resources poses significant barriers, while socially the lack of support from NGOs exacerbates these challenges. The study suggests the need for disease-resistant silkworm races, improved access to scientific equipment and better marketing strategies. Additionally, it highlights the importance of skill-oriented training programs, the provision of separate rearing houses and the inclusion of female extension workers. These interventions are essential to bridge the gap between current practices and the potential for enhanced sericulture productivity in the region ultimately improving the livelihoods of sericulture farmers in Kashmir.
