Management of gangrenous mastitis in a cross bred jersey cow

Author(s): Dr. S Kavibharathy, Dr. R Poonguzhali and Dr. N Devadevi
Abstract: Mastitis, a prevalent ailment in dairy cows globally, poses significant economic concerns due to the necessity of culling affected animals. It induces inflammation in the udder, leading to irreversible damage. Clinical mastitis is categorized into acute, sub-acute, and chronic forms, caused primarily by bacterial organisms persisting in the environment and within the udder. Subclinical mastitis, if undetected, can progress to clinical stages, notably the severe gangrenous form caused by organisms like Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Gangrenous mastitis exhibits intense inflammation, necrosis, and characteristic signs like heat and swelling, often necessitating amputation of affected quarters to save the cow's life. Early detection through somatic cell count and bacterial load can prevent progression. However, inadequate diagnosis and awareness among farmers hinder timely intervention. This case report discusses the management of gangrenous mastitis in a crossbred cow under field conditions.
