Abstract: Piper longum was subjected to assess its immunomodulatory activity in Broiler chicken against the ND virus. An in vivo immunomodulatory study was conducted using a total of 120 broiler birds and distributed into four groups Group I, II, III & IV which were treated with Normal saline, P. longum at 15mg/kg, 10mg/kg from day 7 to 21 and Levamisole at 15mg/kg from day 7 to 10 respectively. All the birds were vaccinated against the ND virus by using the Lasota vaccine on day 7 and average HI antibody titres were estimated on days 1, 7, 21 & 28 days. Antibody titres on day 28 were 6.125±0.440, 7.75±0.25, 7.75±0.163, and 7.85±0.125 in groups I to IV respectively. The groups receiving P. longum extract have shown a significant increase in HI titre than the control group (group I) and comparable titre with that of group IV (Levamisole) indicating the immune-boosting property of P. longum extract. The current findings have demonstrated that ethanolic extract of P. longum has great antiviral and immunomodulatory activity against NDV.
