Emergency whole blood transfusion and chemotherapeutic management of babesiosis infection in a Holstein Friesian cross bred cow

Abstract: A pluriparous crossbred Holstein Friesian cow in mid lactation was reported to large animal medicine unit of veterinary clinical complex, Namakkal with the history of anorexia, dull and depressed appearance, passing coffee coloured urine and sternal recumbency for past two days. On physical examination mucous membranes were slightly icteric, prescapular lymph node was of optimal size. Clinical examination revealed subnormal temperature (37.1˚ C), tachycardia (100 bpm) and tachypnea (41 bpm). Blood picture depicted anaemia, peripheral blood smear revealed Babesia bigemina organism. Hematology revealed PCV 13.1%, Hb 3.5 g /dl and RBC 2.72 mill/ cumm. Animal was treated with Inj Diminazene aceturate @3.5 mg per kg b.wt deep IM single dose, Inj oxytetracycline @ 20 mg/ kg IV, along with haemotonics and supportive therapy However based on haematology blood transfusion and carried out on the subsequent day. Clinical improvement was observed on next day of transfusion. This present case report describes successful blood transfusion as a critical case as a life saving therapeutic intervention to save the life of high yielding animal thus the livelihood of the farmer.
