Nipah virus: An update on prevention and control strategies with special reference to the latest outbreak in India

Abstract: Nipah virus (NiV) causes viral infection characterized by mild symptoms to fever, cough, headache and dementia. In complicated cases, it may progress to encephalitis, seizures and coma. The Nipah virus is grouped under the genus Henipavirus, a type of RNA virus. It is zoonotic in nature and can spread between human beings and from animals to human also. Transmission of NiV occurs by direct contact with an infected source. Specific types of fruit bats act as the reservoir of this virus and the diagnosis of the disease is based on laboratory testing.
